Alan Williams Nov 16, 1999
I am researching members of the Martin Van Buren SWEARINGEN family. Bible records show that the family moved from Whiteside County to Lee County sometime in the years 1872-1874. Born in Lee County were children Laodecia, Sarah Viantha, and twins Elmer Ellsworth and Elsie. The family were farmers. They moved from Lee County to Iowa in 1879. One of the twins (Elsie) born in 1878, was never mentioned in any records in Iowa. For that reason, it is believed that she did not survive birth. I am in need of birth records, and possibly a record of death and⁄or cemetery information. Unfortunatedly, I do not know the township of residence for this family. Any information on the Swearingen surname from Lee county is deeply appreciated. Alan Williams, 47796 Forbes, Chesterfield, MI 48047, aldwil@worldnet.att.net.

Eddie Nangle Oct 20, 1999
I enquire from Ireland about an ancestor of my wife. His name was Michael BARRON, who lived in⁄near Amboy, Lee County, Illinois around 1900. A letter from him in January 1900 stated that he farmed about 80 acres at that time, although I don't have any more precise address or location for him than that. He signed his name on that letter as 'BARNES', a popular pronunciation of his name at home in Ireland. In addition, his level of literacy doesn't seem to have been very high, so he may have been just spelling phonetically.
I would appreciate it if you could find out anything about him, as I have failed to get anywhere with my enquiries about him so far. I don't have any record of him marrying, or of having a family. Other correspondence which I have recorded elsewhere links Michael Barron with Ira W. LEWIS, Court Clerk and Recorder in Lee County. The correspondence places Michael Barron's land as being in the West half of the North East Quarter of Section No. 16, Tp.19, Rq. 10, east of 4th Principal Meridian.
Other correspondence from another family member based in Philadephia in 1912 mentioned that the same Michael Barron had daughters, but we don't know where he married, or if he was married when he lived in Amboy - he didn't mention any family members in his letter of January 1900. Would it be possible to ascertain if he was married while in Amboy, or, if not, where could that information be found? Yours, Eddie Nangle.

In 1909 my great grandfather David GEORGE (1828-1912), living near Franklin Grove⁄Ashton, had a book reprinted, "The economy of human life" and dedicated it to Sylvester Caleb ROBINSON. Is this name familiar to anyone? The book was given to various people in the Lee Co. area, so it could turn up in a home library. The book claims to be ancient eastern literature, but it was written by Robert Dodsley of England.

Surnames: BLACK⁄VANDLING⁄CARTER⁄SHELL⁄HEBERLIN⁄JONES This is an update of a previous query. James and Mary Carter Black migrated to Lee county in 1851-4 from Columbia Co., PA or Northumberland Co. Apparently there was one huge group from Northumberland all at once. Included was Mary Carter Black's mother Anna Marie Vandling Carter Shell (Vandling maiden name, Carter 1st husband and Shell 2nd husband) Can any one tell me about this migration. And especiall anything about Anna Marie Vandlings heritage.
I also believe there was a Jones family involved in this migration. One John Jones married either James Black's sister or Mary Carter's sister. And apparently she died. John is found in the 1880 Barton or Jasper County Missouri census living as a boarder in a household with his two children living James Black and his son William's housholds. Would like to find our about the Jones, too.
Looking for information on Christopher JONES, John JONES, William JONES, children of Margarette HUBBARD. (maiden name CARTER or SHELL). Grandmother was Ann Marie CARTER 2m SHELL. These children were born in Lee Co. Prior to 1863.
VANDLING⁄CARTER⁄GIRTON⁄KENNEDY I have one query running for a James Black and his sister Mary Carter. Mary Carter's brother Joseph married Mary KENNEDY. Brother James married LaFame GIRTON. Sister Catherine June Carter married William GIRTON. Mary Carter's mother migrated to Lee County from Northumberland Co., PA. Her maiden name was Anna Marie Vandling. She married William Carter. Later she married Christopher Shell. I believe all migrated to Lee County from either Columbia Co., or Northumberland Co. PA about 1854. Would love information about Anna Marie Vandling Carter Shell. Thanks!

I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Curtis CANNON, who was apparently from Amboy, Ill. My Mom recently showed me a Military Discharge that she had obtained from her father back in the 40's that was from the Civil War. It was a discharge for her Grandfather who was discharged in 1865 from the 46th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He had apparently enlisted in 1861 and served under Gen. Grant at Shiloh and Vicksburg. The Discharge shows his hometown as Amboy, Ill. and I have found the records in Civil War files. The only information I have is that my Mom's father, Benjamine D. Cannon, was the son of Curtis Cannon of Amboy, Ill. and that Benjamine married his wife, Mitilda M. in Marion, Ks. in 1900.

I'm posting the same information to several counties due to the fact that all these are brothers and sisters to one another and are brothers and sisters to my ancestor Jacob J. SKINNER. From what I have seen, many other families from Susquehanna County, PA especially the towns of Harmony and Great Bend settled in the parts of Illinois where my Skinners settled. All were sons and daughters of Jacob Skinner (1778) and Rhoda McDOWELL (1881). This is an old family, arriving in the U.S around 1650.
Lee County; China Twp.
Alpheus G. Skinner (1⁄1817) m. Olive LEWIS (1824). They had one son David (1849) as of 1850. Olive's father Levi Lewis and brother Joseph Lewis also lived in China Twp. There were other Lewises and at least one Trowbridge from Susquehanna, County, PA.
John Skinner (5⁄1802) m. Diadema SALISBURY (1808). They had in 1850: Hiram (1828), Lydia (1833) and Willard (1841). Willard was born in Pennsylvania and David (Alpheus) was born in Illinois.
LaSalle County, Adams Twp.
William R. WELLS (1810) m. Betsy Skinner (10⁄1812). They had in 1850: Adolphus (1833), William F. (1835), Elijah (1840), Sally A (1842), ?Female (1844) and Sarah E. (1849). All but Sarah born in Pennsylvania. They had moved to Seneca, KS by 1860. One of the children was chief justice of Kansas.
Abraham Skinner (1806) m. Mary BRUSH (1810). He had 2 boys that were not living with them (not sure if they stayed in PA or came to IL, no names in 1830⁄40 census). Laura and Eli KINNEY were living with them. My guess is Laura is their daughter. Eli Kinney was borni in NY as was Laura.
Cook Co., Town of Thornton
Josiah Skinner (1824) was an innkeeper in Thornton, Cook, IL in 1870. He may have came west after the four mentioned above. He married Hannah ? and had in 1870: Fayette (boy) (1849), Ambrosia (1854, in IL), Emert (1862), Bertha (1864), Mary (1867) and Jessie (10⁄1869). They arrived in IL between 1849 & 1854.
Unknowns:
David HALL (1800-1810) m. Rhoda M. Skinner (3⁄1804). They were supposed to have settled near Amboy, Lee County, IL but I can find no census record for them at this time.
Benajah A. Skinner (5⁄1808) m. Deborah TARKEY (1814). They moved to Illinois after 1850. I haven't been able to find them either. Children born in PA as of 1850: Francis (1833), Adaline (1837), Phoebe (1840), Abner (1843), Amelia (1845), Lucinda (1847), James (1848) and Almora (5⁄1850).
Timothy CANNON (1800-1810) m. Phoebe Skinner (9⁄1810). They had a few children, names unknown. They were also supposed to have moved to Illinois and died there. Again, no records.
They seem to have arrived in Illinois, mostly in a group except for Benejah and maybe Josiah sometime between 1844 and 1849. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have extensive information on this line of people back in PA, NY, CT, MA and England back to almost 1600.

Niels Hanson TOXWORD and his brother Chris immigrated from Danmark in 1868. Nels worked for a few months in Portland, Maine and then moved to Lee Center where he worked for five years before moving in 1873 to the Oakland⁄Lyons area of Nebraska to start his own farm. He married Ane Marie EDVARDSEN on February 18, 1872 in DuPage County according to their family Bible. She immigrated to Lee Center in 1870 by way of Chicago. What would have attracted these immigrants to Lee County in 1868? What families would have had farms with hired hands? Where would they have been housed? Were they like migrant workers or did they work on one farm only? Were other records of such people kept? Thank you, Jan Jones, 20 Liberty Lane, Averill Park, NY 12018-5907.

Seeking any information on a John PEARSLEY (or soundex P624 equivalent) who arrived from Scotland as a five-year-old in the mid 1840s and wound up somewhere in Northwestern Illinois. I am looking for any information on the family of my ggrandmother, Anna Maria BURDICK, who was born in Dixon 10 May 1864 to Helen M. "Nellie" HAWLEY BURDICK and Nathan Crandall BURDICK. Nathan was also born in Dixon, 10 Jan. 1844, to Nathan Curtis and Ruhama BURDICK (her maiden name was also BURDICK). Nathan Crandall BURDICK and Helen M. "Nellie" HAWLEY were supposedly married 1 Oct. 1862 in Eldena, but I have yet to find a record of the marriage. Other children born in Dixon were Bertha Albertina BURDICK, born 20 March 1867, and Minnie D. BURDICK, born in 1868 or 1869. A son, Nathan Charles BURDICK was born 9 Nov. 1878 in Clinton County, Iowa. Nathan Crandall apparently left the family around 1880 when they were living in Council Grove, Kansas and Helen was later granted a divorce. She then married two additional times, once in Kansas, once in Boise, Idaho (to George CURL) and supposedly died in 1923, but I don't know where .I also don't know what happened to Nathan Crandall after he deserted the family. I would welcome any information on any of the BURDICKS or HAWLEYS that might be connected with this family, and will be glad to share additional info I have. Thanks, Elaine Veloz - fmichael@gte.net

I am trying to locate the civil war leavings of my g-g-grandfather Elisha NOONER. He enlisted with the 3rd Ky Confederate Mounted Inf. at the beginning of war. We believe he was captured in western Ky and placed in a Union Prison in Ill. Near the end of the war we find him enlisted in the !5th Ill Inf. Place of enlistment was in Amboy, Lee Co., Ill. There were so many Union enlistments in Amboy we suspect that it may have been a "recruitment" center for the confederates prisoners joining the union. If anyone has conformation of this I would appriciate them dropping me a line. Ric Nooner, RNOONER@MAIL.KYTC.STATE.KY.US
